Langdon's ROXY Theater has burst onto the national/international scene in 2010.. Notoriety exploded after July 5 when the New York Times printed the front page article "Old Movie Houses Find Audiences in the Plains" with the dateline LANGDON. Visit the link here.
The thesis of the Times reporter was to discover if small theaters are viable in these days of NetFlix, TV movie downloads, and multi-plex movie theaters. Although reporter Patricia Leigh Brown visited several other North Dakota communities, the dateline was LANGDON, and seven of the eight photos were of the ROXY.
But, the notoriety doesn't stop there. On July 16 and 17, a Toronto based film company, Loose Wire Productions, was in Langdon. They interviewed and took photos. Their goal is to produce a documentary to take to film festivals with hopes of selling it to a TV company. Langdon was their only North Dakota stop as they make their way toward the West Coast.
The third visit on July 17 was reporter Kevin Tibbles from NBC news. He interviewed at the FARGO Theater in Fargo, the Rockford Theater in New Rockford and Langdon's ROXY. The story aired on NBC 5:30 Nightly News on July 20.
Northern Lights Arts Council emphasizes the attention that the arts can draw to a small community. In 1997, Northern Lights Arts Council purchased the ROXY, which is operated as a non-profit. The goal is to provide a meeting place where area residents can find entertainment at a relatively low cost. In addition to movies, it is a venue for musicals, concerts, and high school plays.
